Mission

The modern concept of sustainable development is generally based on the idea that prolonged economic progress depends on effectively addressing a society's economic, social and environmental interests. The mission of the Sustainable Consumer Guide and The Sustainable News is to foster sustainable development by enabling consumers to make decisions that are informed from these different perspectives. They also foster the development of a shared network of consumer and employee generated information about businesses and encourage consumers to use this informaton to support sustainable businesses.

Sustainability is defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as, “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” In 2005 the United Nations launched the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). Its goal is to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning (video).
